The balrog were first and foremost beings of immense power, created by the One, and they became what mortals called spirits of fire. They were before world was created, they were before there was such a concept as time. At first they were beings of beauty and charm, and they helped the One create and shape the world as the One saw fit. The One, however, created other immortal beings too, and one was such that it hungered for power the One possessed. These matters were of course of no consequence to the One, but before the treacherous god was deposed, it had had the audacity to turn balrogs away from the One's grasp. It is not known if every member of the balrog -race fought the One with the evil god, but because no balrog of beauty and charm has been met, it is supposed that they were all twisted. And most of them truly were. They became a race of hatred-wrung, power-hungry behemoths of not little power, and they were the officers of the evil god's army of conquest. When that god failed, faltered and was cast down, balrogs lost most of their power, for they had no immortal being at whose aura they could bask, and balrogs turned bitter, for they thought that it was not their fault. They thought they were charmed by the evil god, and that the One should take them back. They have diminished over the centuries, living of the bitterness and hatred against the other, lesser, races. They are of huge stature, their red skin is thick and their clawed hangs and fangs are eager to shred blood. These magical beings now take delight in delivering physical, hand-felt pain, and are always utterly confident in their superiority. Balrogs are known to be extremely sensitive to water.
